Simply, Orofacial Myology is the practice of working with the muscles of the face, jaw, lips and tongue using therapeutic methods to achieve correct function.

What causes an Orofacial Myology Disorder?

Often it is difficult to point to one particular source as the sole cause of an orofacial myological disorder. In most cases it is the result of a combination of environmental and hereditary factors. Orofacial Myology disorders can have a negative developmental effect on facial muscles and the alignment of the teeth and jaws.

Who can be treated and how?

Patients ranging in age from very young to mature adults can all benefit from Orofacial Myology therapy as it is exercise based. A therapy program is developed for each individual depending on his or her specific need.

An Orofacial Myologist begins each session by taking measurements to track the progression of results. The patient learns new exercises every week. Lasting results come quickly, as the exercises are fun and easy.

How many visits on average does it usually take?

Typically it takes about 4 months. Your first visit consists of a 1-½ hour evaluation. Each visit after the evaluation takes about thirty minutes.

How much time will I have to put in for the therapy to be effective?

Exercises take about five minutes three times daily. A commitment to the exercises allows results to occur in a short period of time.

Does my insurance cover Orofacial Myology therapy?

Currently there are some codes that may qualify for benefits under certain insurance policies.
